Working relationships with colleagues and supervisors cited as highest sources of satisfaction among employees.

Vancouver, B.C. – The third annual “Dream Employer” poll of 2,000+ Metro Vancouver residents, conducted by Insights West in partnership with Miles Employment Group and the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, uncovers the drivers of employee satisfaction and reveals the Top 10 “Dream Employers” in Metro Vancouver.

The online survey found that Metro Vancouver employees are more satisfied with their current employers overall when compared to scores from last year. Three-in-four are “happy” (50%, +4% since last year) or “delighted” (24%, +2%) with their current employers. The number of those that are “not so happy” (26%), is down 6% since 2015.

Almost nine-in-ten Metro Vancouver employees (88%) report being satisfied with their working relationships with colleagues, while at least three-in-four are satisfied with their relationships with supervisors (78%), vacation time (also 78%), job security (76%) and physical work environment (75%). Employees are less satisfied with opportunities for advancement (51%) and bonuses (43%).

The likelihood of employed residents to recommend their place of employment has also started to rise over the past three years. When asked to rate their likelihood of recommending their organization to someone they knew that was looking for a job on a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being “not at all likely” and 10 being “extremely likely” to recommend, two thirds (65%) rate themselves as 7 or higher, an increase of 7% since last year. In contrast, the percentage of those that are unlikely to recommend their place of work (35%) has dropped 7 points from the previous year.

The survey also posed the question: If you could work for any company in Metro Vancouver, who would it be? Respondents were asked to think specifically about as many as three organizations that currently operate in Metro Vancouver and would qualify as their “Dream Employer.” From the 4,603 votes tallied, the Top 10 “Dream Employers” ordered by votes are:

1.    City of Vancouver
2.    BC Hydro
3.    Vancouver Canucks Sports & Entertainment
4.    University of British Columbia (UBC)
5.    Electronic Arts/EA Sports/EA Games
6.    Tourism Vancouver
7.    Vancouver Aquarium
8.    BC Children’s Hospital/BC Women’s Hospital
9.    Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
10.  City of Surrey

“Overall satisfaction with employers in Metro Vancouver is on the rise, says Steve Mossop, President of Insights West. “Relatively good economic times, a growing job market, and perhaps increased costs of living and housing prices seem to have had the effect of increasing how content employees are with their jobs—loyalty is higher than it’s been in the past three years. We are also extremely proud of the local organizations who have managed to rise above the others and place among the Top 10 finalists for our ‘Dream Employer’ Award.”

The results of the survey were presented at the 3rd Annual “Dream Employer” Awards yesterday afternoon. To view the presentation, click here.
