A majority of residents say the municipal government is doing a “good job” on nine of 12 different issues.

Calgary, AB – Almost a year after the re-election of Mayor Naheed Nenshi, residents of Calgary believe the city is being run well, a new Insights West poll has found.

In the online survey of a representative city sample, Calgarians were asked to rate the performance of the municipal government on 12 different issues.

At least two thirds of residents say Calgary is doing a “very good” or “good” job providing good sanitation services (81%), promoting tourism to Calgary (79%), dealing with crime (72%), enhancing their overall quality of life (67%) and fostering artistic and cultural activities (66%).

A majority of Calgarians also think The City has done a good job protecting the environment (56%), making City Hall work in a transparent and unbiased fashion (52%), managing development and growth (51%) and handling the city’s finances (also 51%).

Half of residents are satisfied with the way The City is dealing with transportation (50%) as well as its efforts to engage with regular people (49%). The lowest ranked competency is dealing with homelessness and poverty (44%).

“The level of satisfaction among Calgarians with most of the core issues under the purview of the municipal government is extraordinary,” said Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs, at Insights West. “On areas such as transparency and engagement, where other municipalities cannot even get close to the 40-per-cent mark, Calgary is connecting in a satisfactory manner with half of its constituents.”

Housing (27%) and transportation (25%) are regarded as the most important issues for residents, followed by health care (11%), crime (9%) and economic development (8%).

The approval rating for Mayor Naheed Nenshi stands at 73%, with women (82%) and residents aged 18-to-34 (81%) being the most satisfied with his performance. Only 23% of Calgarians disapprove of the mayor’s performance.
